SCOTTISH FRIENDSHIPS MADE!

Monday, November 17, 2025 will be a day to remember at the Comox Valley Curling Centre.

Twenty-four Comox Valley Ladies League curlers played against twenty-fourScottish Ladies curlers.Nine teams vied for six spots and it was purely luck of the draw who was fortunate enough to be chosen.The Scottish Ladies scored more points than we did, but it looked like everyone had a wonderful time out on the ice.

The day began with the bus arriving at The Flying Apron. Karen, a mother of one of our curlers, came to teach the Scots how to tuft Caribou hair-a potential new hobby for some. After a delicious lunch, the bus headed over to the curling club where they were greeted with enthusiastic cheering as they walked through the broom arch.

All of the teams were piped onto the ice by a member of the Comox Valley Pipe and Drums. Following the piper was an RCMP member, dressed in red serge, carrying the Muriel Fage Friendship Cup. After toasting the piper, the ceremonial rock was thrown by Cindy Wenzek, a 2024 Canada-to-Scotland tour member. Nancy Riva held the broom while Linda Martin and Crystal Murray swept the rock to the pin.

After the exciting games, the ladies enjoyed an after-game drink.

Before dinner, grace was given by Pat Everett, a local curler, with roots in Scotland.A fabulous dinner was catered by Custom Gourmet Catering, who is a new addition to the club.

After dinner, thank-you speeches were given by the Canadians, and warmly reciprocated by the Scots.The Scottish ladies then entertained all of us with rousing songs and a skitthat had the whole room in tears of laughter!

In true Canadian fashion, the“shooting the broom” tradition followed-four curlers drink a shot from a curling broom together. Magnum, a Scottish Crème Liqueur was the shot of choice for this lively group.

To wrap up the evening all joined together to sing Auld Lang Syne.
