The Phoenix has arisen, again!! What a weekend. The Courtenay Kia Phoenix Men’s Invitational Bonspiel wrapped up it's second glorious year this Sunday November 2. Twenty nine teams from around BC came for their chance to rise skyward into the curling echelons.
Taking the Ron Schmidt Assante Wealth Management championship event was Qualicum's Jackson Nowak team, who made a tricky big weight raise takeout on an over-buried stone to bring the house down in an epic extra end final. Congrats to skip Jackson, third John Evans, 2nd Neil Bidewell, and Doug Smith. They are getting their name on the stunning Phoenix bonspiel’s trophy, a true work of art constructed by Ian Lowe at Lowe Tide Design. Congrats are also in order to the runner up Kevin May team from Campbell River Curling Club, who stomped on their competition (I know first hand) up until the final. Well done Kevin, with Normand Cotè, Scott Kratzman, and Ken Dawson.

The Courtenay Kia B Division prize went to the DeHart team, who took down Team Parent. Well done to Mike and Brad DeHart, who partnered with two of our most promising Junior curlers Matthew Harris and Roy Peters. These two are big boys with even bigger voices, making even still bigger shots.
The Lowe Tide Design C Event was won by the CVCC’s Dan Brennan team. Congrats Dan, Mike Meeres, Jay Dzuba, & Tim Corkery. Winners of the Crown Isle Resort D Event was the venerable Dave Pacholuk. Dave won the D on great last rock angle raise over Ron Schmidt, who got Pach-ed twice in the event. An honour to be sure! Well done to Dave and his team Adam Streichsbier, Miles Jones, and Gion Fravi.

The Bumper To Bumper Calcutta considerable prize dollars was won by Jason Andrew/Team Nowak, Team Desmet, Rick Thomson, and GIon Fravi, who’s elevated scouting and passionate belief in the winning teams netted them over $5700 in winnings. Bumper to Bumper also provided a pizza to each time Friday night!

If that wasn’t enough, this was the 2nd qualifying event of the Sweeper’s Cup to be held in Duncan in March, with the winners to compete for a cash pot estimated to approach $20000. Our Courtenay Kia Ladies Open Bonspiel, and Eric Chayko Hangover Mens in January, are also Sweepers Cup qualifiers.
Did I plug ALL of the sponsors? I’m guessing there’s more! Robbins and Co! Speedy Auto Glass! CSN Reliable Autobody & Collision! Who else?
Yolanda and Custom Gourmet Catering provided great food all weekend in their first bonspiel service. A tofu dish at a men's bonspiel, amazing and appreciated! Arthur and Gord and crew for some consistent ice with great curl

In conclusion, we’d like to shine a very bright spotlight on the crew behind the event. Phoenix Co-chairs Tim Corkery and Mike Morrissey and their entire team ran a well thought out, super organized, and ridiculously fun weekend, even if the Blue Jays kind of interfered with some of the plans. The number of compliments CVCC management and office staff received about how well run the weekend was, was pretty non stop. So thanks to Tim and Mike and the whole team. Especially Courtenay Kia’s Mark Hamilton, with in no particular order Richard & Jayne Tanguay, Jay Dzuba, Adam Duncan, Craig Bernes, Blake Johnson, Darren Richards, Mickey Colburn, Ian Lowe and more. Thanks to this great crew, the Phoenix has truly risen...again.
