The Comox Valley Curling Club and Gladstone Brewing Company are collaborating to form the Gladstone Friday Fun Curling League. The league is specifically for those relatively new to the great roaring game of curling, with the focus on fun, as much as it is on instruction and learning the sport.
What makes this league different is the old barriers of joining a curling club or league have been removed. The league runs on Fridays at 6 p.m. in three six-week sessions. The first session is Oct. 6. Join for six, 12 or 18 weeks.
“In the recent past, someone interested in curling would take a lesson or a clinic, and then be faced with the prospect of having to find a team, then join a league and commit to a 25-week curling season. And that is only if there is room in a league to begin with,” says Keith Parry, co-manager of Comox Valley Curling Club. “Besides the lack of options and long commitment, new curlers were then faced with playing with and against those with years of experience. So it was intimidating. The Gladstone Friday Fun League aims to shatter all of those obstacles to participating in what is an amazingly fun and social sport.”
Since Gladstone opened its doors in 2015, the brewery has helped revitalize downtown Courtenay. Gladstone beer will be available on tap in the lounge for pre- and post-game pints.
“We are always happy to have our beer on tap somewhere new, but we are all most excited to put together our teams, and challenge others for some friendly competition,” Gladstone founder Daniel Sharratt said.
